The US Code defines "disability" for both Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income as an "inability “to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months.” 42 U.S.C. §§423(d)(1)(A) and 1382c(a)(3)(A). But it is complicated, with many eddies. 

Generally, Social Security disability benefits are reduced for persons who are receiving workers' compensation. It is fraud not to inform SSA when receiving benefits. For how SSA offsets and the Hartman Formula, see Roundtable in chart below.
